Physiological and Pathological Ageing

This volume stands as a monument to Dr. Vladimir Korenchevsky, one of the pioneers in gerontological research. Published posthumously under the able editorship of Dr. Geoffrey H. Bourne, it carries the stamp of the beliefs of Dr. Korenchevsky. Born in Russia in 1880, Dr. Korenchevsky emigrated to Great Britain, in 1920, where he became a senior research worker at the Lister Institute for Preventive Medicine. In 1945 he established the Oxford Gerontological Unit through the support of the Nuffield Foundation, so that he has had a direct role in the development of experimental gerontology. This volume reflects his wide background of experience. Korenchevsky believed that "old age is an abnormal, pathological syndrome, in which physiological processes of ageing are complicated and aggravated by various so-called degenerative diseases of old age."
