摘要
Biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy proposed that the biological concept of a system was a useful framework for studying the phenomena of all sciences. It was at this time the concept of general systems theory was born. General systems theory or systems theory is a conceptual framework that moves beyond the reductionistic and mechanistic tradition in science to focus on linear cause and effect relationships. The family systems view goes beyond static concepts to take account of the temporal quality of life and the omnipresence of change. The Bowen family systems theory is one of the most comprehensive explanations for the development of psychological problems from a systemic and multigenerational perspective. This chapter discusses the conceptual basis for Bowenian systems theory and its applications. The major constructs of Bowen family system theory are differentiation of self, nuclear family emotional process, multigenerational transmission process, family projection process, interlocking triangles, emotional cutoff, sibling position, and societal emotional process.
