They contend that we may have missed an effect of MI because MI may have been imperfectly delivered. We recognized that only 26 studies assessed fidelity. In the 14 studies reporting the findings, all reported satisfactory fidelity assessed through observation of consultations, use of MI adherence or competence scores (1), or both. It is plausible that MI was not perfectly delivered; however, the typical study offered 2 full days of training, and several studies offered ongoing support and supervision to ensure fidelity.
