Diabetes educators: rewriting the narrative

“We are a large family”, agree Prashanth Mani, Lakshminarayana Varimadugu, and Sridhar Rajamohan, who are diabetes educators in India and who live with type 1 diabetes themselves. Diabetes care in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) entails many challenges. Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and even non-diagnosis, are common. Access to treatment is variable and is often paid out-of-pocket, adding financial stress to the equation. And as if all that wasn't enough, misinformation and stigma are prevalent; this is why the job of Prashanth, Lakshminarayana, and Sridhar, who spend much of their time helping others in their native country to self-manage and understand their condition, is so important.
