Integrated Analysis of Bulk and Single-Cell Transcriptomics in Cervical Cancer: Insights into BPGM, EGLN3, and SUN1

Cervical cancer (CC) is considered a significant global health threat to women, therefore there is a need for personalized treatment strategies based on individual-specific gene expression patterns to enhance recovery and survival rates. Although a few studies have linked bisphosphoglycerate mutase (BPGM) expression with CC, its precise role in CC progression remains unclear. In this study, we conducted an integrated analysis for both bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data to investigate the involvement of BPGM in CC. On the bulk RNA level, the Wilcoxon test result showed a significant upregulation of BPGM levels in CC tissue samples compared to the control samples, and particularly BPGM was found in the cancer cell subgroup within tumors on the single-cell RNA (scRNA) level. Furthermore, the survival analysis for BPGM level and its highly correlated genes indicated that, BPGM, egl-9 family hypoxia inducible factor 3 (EGLN3) as well as the Sad1 and UNC84 domain containing 1 (SUN1) could be predicting markers for the survival probabilities of CC patients with a significant p-value lower than 0.05. The pathway enrichment analysis for the BPGM and its correlated genes revealed various CC-related pathways such as PI3K-Akt and AMPK signalling pathways, which are very relevant for disease progression. Overall, these findings suggest that BPGM and its correlated genes could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker for CC.
