Cooperative and collaborative learning

Multiple decades of research confirm the potential of cooperative and collaborative group work for promoting student learning. This article describes recently developed instructional programs designed to foster productive communication among students in cooperative and collaborative groups, and discusses advances in our understanding of both the links between student interaction during group work and learning outcomes and the ways in which teachers can support productive group functioning.
