The best studied viruses in the Rhabdoviridae family are rabies virus (RABV) and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Rabies is a progressive encephalitic disease that almost always results in the death of the victim although rare cases of prolonged life and the survival of one human without the administration of vaccine has been reported using the Milwaukee protocol or other supportive care approaches. RABV is readily destroyed through exposure to soap and other disinfectants, desiccants, and sunlight. VSV can infect domestic animals including cattle, swine, horses, donkeys, and mules. Bovine ephemeral fever virus is not spread by casual contact but is spread intravenously generally through the bite of an infected insect vector. Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus infection results in a serious viral disease of salmonid fish. Veterinary Microbiology, Fourth Edition RelatedInformation
