The fungus present in a soil sample collected from Northern Manitoba was cultured. The natural products produced by this organism were isolated and identified as the polyketides (1), (2), (3). A trace amount of the aromatic alcohol tyrosol (4) was also isolated. This organism was identified as Daldinia loculata by sequencing of the internally transcribed spacer region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The polyketides 1–3 were assayed against E. coli and it was observed that 1 displayed mild antibiotic activity.
