The theory of the cohesive energies of solids

Abstract The history of ideas concerning the cohesive energy of solids is sketched, and the recent rapid progress in this area is summarized. Reliable calculations based on first principles are now possible for a wide range of problems. This will significantly increase the predictive power of solid-state theory in the coming years.
