Anatomical, mechanical, and physiological effect of cataract surgery in open-angle and narrow-angle glaucoma

Cataract and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Older age is a risk factor for both diseases. Cataract surgery can provide restoration of visual function, whereas intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction is the only proven therapy to slow down progression of glaucoma. There is increasing evidence that cataract offers IOP-lowering effect not only in narrow-angle but also in open-angle glaucoma (OAG). In this chapter, a review will be provided on recent studies on anatomical, mechanical, and physiological effect of cataract surgery in narrow-angle and OAG.
