Sustainable development of water resources for a karstic region of Java, Indonesia

Water has become precious for the inhabitants of the karstic area of Wonosari — Wonogiri, in the special Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Shortage of water supply is always experienced by the people living in the study area. In order to enhance the water supply, some field and desk studies have been done. Some potential sources such as lake water, spring water, river water, and groundwater are observed in the area. The increasing population and water demand will give a bigger threat to these limited water sources. It is urgently needed to introduce appropriate good exploitation, management, and conservation system to maintain the continuity of water supply. Aquifer recharge enhancement is a potential option to meet the water shortage in this area.
