摘要
Biotechnology is in a rapid development stage and has formed an interdisciplinary and comprehensive system of research, development, and production, which is led by medical biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, and industrial biotechnology. The rapid development of the upstream field of biotechnology has put forward higher requirements to the downstream field of biochemical engineering. This chapter introduces the applications of both uniform microspheres and super-porous microspheres in biochemical engineering. Microspheres are the most widely used biochemical engineering materials because of their rich structure and variety, easy functionalization, excellent pore structure, and good stability. Super-porous microspheres have unique advantages in purification of superlarge biomolecules. Compared with traditional chromatographic media, super-porous microspheres have stronger permeability to biomolecules, which can flow in the inner pores of super-porous microspheres by both convection and diffusion, greatly increasing the separation speed and improving the mass transfer efficiency.
