Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging pollutants and have been reported to cause the disintegration of anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). However, the mechanism involved in AnGS disintegration was not clear. In this study, polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics (PVC-NPs) were chosen as target NPs and their long-term impact on AnGS structure was investigated. Results showed that increasing PVC-NPs concentration resulted in the inhibition of acetoclastic methanogens, syntrophic propionate, and butyrate degradation, as well as AnGS disintegration.
