Anion-sealed capsules are formed via hydrogen bonding interactions between pyrogallol[5]arenes or resorcin[5]arenes with anions, as described by Agnieszka Szumna and co-workers in their Communication on page 4540. The capsules have a dodecahedral geometry and exist in THF and in benzene, but not in chloroform, reflecting competitive effects in the solvation of anions. It is also demonstrated that mechanochemical pretreatment (dry-milling) of solid samples is indispensable to initialize self-assembly in benzene.
