Localized pigmentation of the skin due to topical mercury

Frequent use of night creams containing inorganic mercury salts may produce a distinctive discoloration of the face, usually limited to the folds of the skin and the eyelids. The pigmentation is due to deposition of mercury in the dermis, and histopathologically resembles a tattoo.
