摘要
Since the 1970s, rapid increases in the price of natural gas and crude oil have accelerated a change in the raw material base for chemical feedstocks from these two fossil fuels to a variety of other carbonaceous feedstocks, such as biomass and biological waste. The widespread use of ethylene (CH2CH2) as a feedstock for petrochemical products also depends on the availability of natural gas and crude oil. As a result, the resource base has moved from natural gas, crude oil and coal to feedstocks such as biomass and solid waste, which have organic constituents. Ethylene is slowly being replaced by synthesis gas (carbon monoxide [CO] and hydrogen [H2]), which can be manufactured directly from carbonaceous feedstocks.
