Complement inhibitors for the treatment of geographic atrophy

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in high-income countries.1 A late form of age-related macular degeneration, geographic atrophy, which progresses to relentless bilateral central vision loss, is estimated to affect 5 million people globally.1 Until recently, there were no proven therapies for geographic atrophy. In 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration approved pegcetacoplan (in February) and avacincaptad pegol (in August) for slowing the progression of lesions of geographic atrophy.
