摘要
"Coatings" refers to a thin film covering the substrate region. The automobiles will look excellent and be well protected thanks to these coatings. Additionally, they prolong the parts' lifespan by preventing corrosion. Various coats of automotive paint are applied. The car's metal body will first receive a phosphate pretreatment to avoid corrosion. The second layer, known as the electrocoat (Ecoat), will be applied to the surface to prevent decay on the body's surface, edges, and cavities. On top of the sturdy foundation produced by combining the pretreatment procedure with Ecoat, there may be additional paint coats. The third layer is the primer, which will shield the metal components from corrosion, stone chips, and ultraviolet light and improve adhesion. So, a primer makes the surface more level or smooth. Basecoat is the fourth layer, giving the car a bright color and a gritty, sparkling impression. As a result, the pigment is classified as solid, metallic, or iridescent. The fifth layer is a clearcoat, also known as a colorless coat, which is applied to achieve a glossy appearance as well as solid UV radiation protection and hardness resistance. This chapter discusses the various coatings, the advantages of the processes, the technology, the applications, and the major suppliers for the automotive coatings industry. The coatings for automobiles can also be found in various pleasant and attractive colors and are exceptionally water-resistant. Due to this, automotive coatings are becoming more popular. The automobile coatings industry will benefit from this in the long run. Considering financial and environmental factors, new innovative coatings are already entering the market. This chapter will go into great detail about new developments and upcoming trends in automotive coatings.
