Abstract Fruit-based functional food is more attractive for health promotion and disease prevention. In recent years, there has been an enormous demand for an increased variety of functional food ingredients with health enhancement properties made from fruits or fruit ingredients. Phenolic compounds, dietary fiber, essential oil and terpenoids, and vitamins are the main active ingredients in fruits. These components have the bioactive properties of antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetes, etc. Phenolic compounds, mainly including flavonoids and phenolic acids, are the most attractive ingredients for fruit-based functional food. Fruit ingredients are popular additions into some conventional foods like fruit juice and drinks, fruit smoothies, snacks, yogurt, and bread. Ultrasound, microwave, and supercritical fluid extractions are typical techniques applied in extraction of bioactive ingredients from fruits. Personalized functional foods and some emerging technologies applied in functional food production will be the trends in development of fruit-based functional food.
