ABSTRACT The two previous papers in this series have dealt almost exclusively with the movements of fish, such as the eel or the butterfish (Centrono tus gunnellus) whose bodies are long and flexible and which exhibit very well-defined waves of muscular contraction when the fish are travelling through the water. The present paper deals primarily with pelagic fish which differ from the eel in two important respects; they possess well-developed caudal fins and the ratio of body lengthbody width is much smaller.
