Scarcity of fresh water is looming in the coming few decades and a large source of alternatives are required soon. One of the most recent technological advancements is Membrane bioreactor (MBR). It is considered to be an improved technological know-how over conventional systems for industrial and municipal wastewater management. Its main procedure is biological treatment with physical barrier separation. To design MBR, some basic requirements are needed like influent characteristics, flow data, etc., for high output. Application of MBR technology critically controls fouling and clogging. Besides several advantages over conventional systems like better effluent quality, ease of automation, etc., higher capital and operating cost should be considered as disadvantages. Yet, it is quite cost-effective when membrane treatment is used in combination with the increasing cost of conventional water treatment. In the given chapter, we deal with the brief idea about MBR and its use in wastewater management.
