Abstract ReBCO superconducting cables with high operating current densities provide potential for the development of future compact thermonuclear fusion reactors. However, the critical performance of the ReBCO tape is sensitive to magnetic field, temperature, and strain, and the critical performance of the cable after its preparation fails to be directly summarized by the critical parameters of the tape used, so the evaluation of the critical performance parameters of the CORC cable is needed. In this paper, a 3D numerical model is proposed to characterize the critical performance of CORC cables, and the model has been validated based on experimental results. This model can determine the weakness of critical current performance in CORC cables relatively quickly, and in the comparison with the T-A formula model, the results show that the computational efficiency of this model is better than that of the T-A formula under the multilayer complex CORC structure.
