Progress and updates have been made regarding the term sarcopenia, moving away from defining it purely as age-related towards recognising it as a result of chronic inflammation and gut dysbiosis [1]. Current consensus by a range of expert groups define it as a progressive and generalised skeletal muscle disorder involving the loss of muscle mass, function and physical strength. [2] Over the last few years, the disease burden from sarcopenia arises globally and both persistent chronic inflammation and malnutrition interplay chorally to predispose patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to the development of sarcopenia.
