Transparent Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ doped gadolinium barium borosilicate glasses were synthesized by the high-temperature melting technique. The luminescence performance was studied by transmittance, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectrum, and decay time curve. The optimal concentration of Tb 3+ ions in gadolinium barium borosilicate glasses was also determined. With the increase of Tb 3+ ions concentration, the lifetime of Eu 3+ decreases from 1.77±0.005 ms to 1.56±0.005 ms. The minimum and maximum of the critical distance Rc of rare earth ions in gadolinium barium borosilicate glass is calculated. Therefore, the energy transfer mechanism of rare earth ions in gadolinium barium borosilicate glass is multipole-multipole interaction.
