Abstract Photoelectric Raman spectra have been recorded over the range 40–4000 cm −1 for a series of metal perchlorates, nitrates, sulfates, chlorides and fluorides in saturated solutions in methanol. Many changes, both in frequencies and in intensities, of the methanol solvent spectrum are noted, and these are compared with the corresponding changes induced by addition of water to methanol. The changes are interpreted in terms of solute interference with the extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions between methanol molecules, and specific forms of interaction between oxyanions and methanol. Spectroscopic evidence for complex formation in these solutions also is discussed.
