Modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) of the D1 transitions of 85Rb and 87Rb atoms with only non-cycling transitions have been investigated theoretically and experimentally using the density matrix equation for four different polarization configurations: linear orthogonal (lin⊥lin), linear parallel (lin ∥ lin), circular orthogonal (σ+−σ−), and circular parallel (σ+−σ+) polarization configurations. MTS signals for the Fg=3→Fe=2 transition of 85Rb atom and Fg=2→Fe=1 transition of the 87Rb atom among D1 transition lines were found to be stronger than those for the other transitions. The two non-cycling transitions have strong MTS signals because of the branching ratios and populations of the relevant ground states. The observed line shapes of the in-phase and quadrature components of MTS signals agree well with the theoretical shapes obtained by solving the density matrix equation.
