Spectrophotometric investigation of the species formed when Na2[PdCl4] is dissolved in glacial acetic acid has shown that two principal equilibria, (i) and (ii), are set up. At 25 °C, K0= 0.56 ± 0.02 and K′=(2.9 ± 0.6)× 2Na2[PdCl4] [graphic omitted] Na2[Pd2Cl6]+ 2NaCl (i), Na2[Pd2Cl6] [graphic omitted] Na[Pd2Cl5(HO2CMe]+ NaCl (ii) 10–5 mol dm–3. Some evidence for equilibrium (iii) has been obtained, but the amount of Na[PdCl3(HO2CMe)] Na2[PdCl4] [graphic omitted] Na[PdCl3(HO2CMe)]+ NaCl (iii) present is so small that the standard deviation in the value of K″ is very high [K″=(3.5 ± 3.7)× 10–4 mol dm–3].
