In article number 2004782, Boris I. Yakobson and co-workers demonstrate binding of reactive gas atoms (H or F) to the exterior graphene layer, to switch its atoms from sp2 to sp3 hybridization, a diamond state. The created dangling bonds connect to the next layer, and such “chemical domino effect” sweeps through to the opposite surface, forming a film with all coveted traits of diamond. Image credit: L.
