Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with cognitive impairment; however, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. OSA is characterized by periods of interrupted ventilation ("ventilatory burden (VB)"), leading to hypoxemia ("hypoxic burden (HB)") and/or arousal ("arousal burden (AB)") from sleep.
