A systematic study has been made of all of the available infrared spectra of acenaphthenes, biphenyls, fluorenes, indans, naphthalenes and tetralins. Bar charts giving the wavelengths between 8 and 1 5 microns at which the bands occur in the spectrum of each compound and also their approximate intensities have been prepared for each of the six groups of compounds and spectral/structural correlations derived from them The correlations together with those already established for alkylbenzenes should be useful in the identification of aromatic hydrocarbons in petroleum fractions and other hydrocarbon mixtures Some acenaphthenes, fluorenes, and naphthalenes have also been examined in the 15 to 22 microns region.
