Formative assessment: an overview of history, theory and application

Formative assessment is a promising practice for improving student achievement and educator performance. Beginning with introduction of the concept of formative evaluation, this article summarizes the history of formative assessment, current conceptualizations, applications, and best practices, and provides suggestions for future research.
