Abstract The incremental yield stress due to coherency stress in a spinodal modulated structure in f.c.c. alloys has been considered using the dislocation force balance equation. A mixed dislocation lying mainly in the positive regions of the internal stress is considered responsible for macroscopic yielding. The calculated yield stress is proportional to the amplitude of the composition modulation and independent of the wavelength. This calculation is in good agreement with experimental data extracted from the literature within a factor of two.
