摘要
The miracle molecule, curcumin, is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These advantageous properties are expedient in combating several neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, curcumin's limited solubility and poor bioavailability hinder the full exploitation of its therapeutic potential. Nanocarriers can enhance drug solubility and protect it against enzymatic degradation. Thus, they represent an excellent solution to overcome curcumin's limitations. In this chapter, we discuss the utilization of several nano-based drug delivery systems such as lipid, polymeric, metallic, protein, and micellar nanocarriers as vehicles for curcumin's delivery against various neurodegenerative diseases. Most of the research in this area is directed toward Alzheimer's disease. Generally, nanocarriers successfully enhanced curcumin's solubility, cellular uptake and showed promising in vivo results. However, the next step of evaluating the clinical effectiveness of such nanocarriers is still limited and in the dire need of being investigated.
