摘要
Attention has been given to supplementing diets of poultry and livestock with additives that not only improve the health of the animals, but also the humans who consume the animal products. In this context, Panax ginseng (known popularly as ginseng) has attracted attention as a potential herbal additive given to poultry and livestock. Due to ginseng’s wide use in human alternative medicine as an adaptogen (stress reliever) and immunostimulant, the possibility that food-producing animals could benefit as well from ginseng is under exploration. Unfortunately, the studies to date attesting the effects of ginseng on animal production are inconclusive, nor do they elucidate the biological mechanisms of action of ginseng. In addition, inconsistencies in herbal quality among studies hamper the interpretation of the results. This review presents the main studies of the use ginseng in animal production with the main focus on egg laying chickens.
