Objective: To determine the extent of dental caries and periodontitis in the patients with end-stage renal disease(ESRD).Methods: 130 stable ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis(HD) therapy and matched 130 controls were included. The dental caries and periodontal status were compared between two groups. Results: The prevalence of dental caries in case group and control group were 67.69% and 76.92% respectively(P=0.096).There was no statistically significant difference in the measurements of decayed teeth, missing teeth, filled teeth and decayed, missing and filled teeth(DMFT) indices between the 2 groups(P=0.095,0.423,0.054 and 0.581,respectively).The periodontal indices were all significantly higher in the case group than those in the control(P0.001).ESRD patients were with severer periodontal disease than the controls(P0.001).Conclusion: The dental caries status is comparable between ESRD patients and healthy controls. The periodontal status is poor in ESRD patients.
