A shell-engineering strategy is proposed for the design of vacancy-laden Fe-doped TiO2 hollow nanospheres, such as “breathing alveolus”, enabling highly efficient and sustainable electrocatalytic N2 reduction and realizing Zn–N2 aqueous batteries.
