摘要
This chapter sheds some light on the plant seed and the environmental factors that contribute to seed longevity in the soil seedbank. It considers the roles of seed vigour and dormancy, and evaluates the role of physiological, biochemical, and ecological factors. Seed longevity is regulated by several physiological traits related to cell metabolism, protection, and repair. The genetics of weed seed longevity is poorly understood; however, some studies have shown that genes related to seed structural composition and hormonal regulation are involved in regulating seed longevity. Environmental conditions can have a significant impact on weed seed production, seed characteristics, and seed dispersal. The knowledge of seed longevity of different weed species in soil seedbanks in conjunction with seedbank composition, emergence patterns, and aboveground weed population dynamics is imperative for sustainable weed management. The chapter provides some suggestions on potential future research needs in the area of weed seed longevity and seedbank management.
