This is one of the best texts of neonatal medicine published during the past several years. The information is current and focuses on major problems encountered in this rapidly developing discipline. An excellent and much needed chapter by Dr Avery, discussing the morality of drastic intervention, outlines many of the ethical and moral problems involved in neonatal care. Although there are 55 contributors, the text is easy to follow and the chapters are woven together in an orderly fashion, despite a great deal of overlapping and repetition. Much of this could have been solved with more careful editing and cross-referencing. The chapters on bacterial and viral infections of the newborn and chronic congenital perinatal infections have many features in common, but both are excellent reviews and present the newer thoughts regarding both viral and bacterial infections in the neonate.
