Personality is one of the important psychological characteristics that affect people's emotions. Individuals with different personalities have different emotions, and emotions, as an unconscious element, always affect people's subjective choices and preferences. In this study, the personality type of users is understood through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and based on the user type, the Mannheim Dream Questionnaire (MADRE) is adopted as a method to obtain the emotional fluctuations and types of users, and then the painting elements in the House-Tree-Person Technique (HTP) are extracted as the criteria for the consideration of users’ design preferences. Finally, emotions and design preferences as variables were combined with the four dimensions of the Myers-Briggs personality type to conclude. Studies show that different personalities have significant differences in emotional Perception and have different design preferences and aesthetic uniqueness. Introversion personality has higher emotional fluctuations and negative emotions than Extraversion, and the perception type likes a circle shape more than Judgment. The Sensing Judgment type likes a quadrangular shape (square, trapezoid, etc.). The Sensing type prefers design which is like the shape of a vase (thick at both ends and thin in the middle) to the Intuition type, while the Intuition Thinking type prefers vertical oval and triangle elements. These findings will be helpful to effectively evaluate users’ emotions towards design from the aspect of personality and provide new ideas for future research on differentiated design.
