Dentigerous cyst excision using shading films in a patient with erythropoietic protoporphyria

Erythropoietic protoporphyria is a rare disease and is potentially fatal because of the accumulation of porphyrin metabolites and associated liver dysfunction resulting from surgical invasion, acute photosensitivity, and administration of certain drugs. Therefore, intraoperative and perioperative stress, light stimulation, and the drugs used in oral surgical treatments must be carefully considered. Herein, we present the case of a 52-year-old man who underwent liver transplantation due to EPP exacerbation and in whom a left mandibular dentigerous cyst was found during postoperative observation. To reduce any stimulus during oral surgery, we performed a preoperative examination and used shading films for the excision of the dentigerous cyst without causing perioperative acute porphyric attack.
