The mechanical properties and the crosslinked-network structure of peroxide-cured nitrile rubber containing magnesium methacrylate have been studied. In the absence of any conventional reinforcing filler, the resulting vulcanizate shows excellent mechanical properties, and has high hardness, strength and elongation at break. The amount of magnesium methacrylate, and of dicumyl peroxide, and the types of rubbers have great influence on the mechanical properties. Structure analysis shows that the vulcanizate contains both covalent and salt crosslinks. The mechanical properties of the vulcanizates are very much influenced by the salt crosslinks.
