Trends in the prescribing pattern of spironolactone for acne and hidradenitis suppurativa in adolescents

To the Editor: Spironolactone is a synthetic aldosterone receptor antagonist and antiandrogen with a variety of uses in dermatology, including the treatment of acne, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), female-pattern hair loss, and hirsutism.1 Spironolactone prescriptions for acne among both dermatologists and nondermatologists have been increasing in recent years.2 Although case series have suggested that spironolactone is useful for adolescent and adult acne, less is known about the trends in the use of spironolactone for acne and HS in teenagers.
