摘要
Sodium as a nutrition for crop plants remains an enthralling and mysterious issue. Although Na+ is not considered an essential nutritional element for most plants but it can be advantageous over certain essential elements at a minute level. Accumulation of Na+ above than the threshold value can have deleterious effects on plant health. Here we will begin with an outline of categorization and concept of essentiality of Na+ as defined by plant biologists. Subsequently, we will discuss the minimum level of requirement of Na+ for performing various functions for crops belonging to C4 plants and related toxicity. Furthermore, we will shed light on the membrane transport system which acts as a gateway for sodium entry into the plant via roots and their distribution throughout the plants. Finally, this episode winds up with the potential references for satisfying the demands of generation of crops enable to settle in a high salinity environment.
