By reading this article, you should be able to: •Discuss the benefits of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme for total hip arthroplasty (THA). •Describe the implications of the various surgical approaches to THA, including robotic surgery, for the anaesthetist. •Explain the pros and cons of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) and regional anaesthesia, and discuss their use in conjunction with systemic analgesics within a multimodal regimen. Nat Haslam FRCA is a consultant anaesthetist at South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust. He specialises in regional anaesthesia and acute pain medicine, and is president-elect of Regional Anaesthesia-UK. Edward Halvey BSc FRCA is a fellow in anaesthesia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia. He was previously a consultant anaesthetist at Northumbria Healthcare NHS, UK, and has special interests in regional anaesthesia and acute pain medicine. Chloe Scott MSc FRCSEd (Tr&Orth) is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, and an NHS Research Scotland clinician. She has a special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty.
