The laser - mass spectrometer has been used to study the vapor species emanating from crystalline and amorphous compositions in the Bi-Se system. Bi3Se is a dominant ionic species in the vapor and is postulated to be the major SRO structural unit in the Bi-Se system. The appearance of other SRO structural units, BiSe4 and BiSe5, can be correlated with a pronounced change in the band gap of the Bi-Se system.
