Evolution, biology, and genetics of seaweeds

Seaweeds are a highly diverse group of organisms that have originated several times independently. Apart from their ecological importance in coastal ecosystems, seaweeds are increasingly regarded as an important feedstock for the Blue Economy. Their evolutionary history, ecological significance, and the genetic toolboxes available to study them are outlined in this chapter.
