The central part of the Mg-Al phase diagram was experimentally re-investigated. Between the {gamma} and {beta} phases only one additional intermediate phase could be verified. The other phases reported in literature may be explained by a commensurate modulation of the {gamma} phase ({gamma}`) found recently by electron diffraction. The solubility limit of {gamma}` near the melting temperature was investigated by wave-length dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Thermodynamic descriptions for these phases are proposed. (orig.) 33 refs.
