An investigation of a decline in Taiwanese inbound tourism with particular reference to the role of government.

Since traveling has been an important and significant activity in world wide, the tourism industry has grown rapidly in recent years and it is expected to grow well into the foreseeable future. However, contrary to the general trend of the industry Taiwanese inbound tourism has decreased significantly in recent years. The aim of this report is to investigate the reasons for the recent decline in Taiwan's inbound tourism industry. To achieve this aim, the role of government in tourism will be examined, particularly in its policies concerning promotion. The role of government will be studied by comparing Taiwan to South Korea, a country which has many similarities. The development of inbound tourism in Taiwan and South Korea will be analysed by a statistical review. In addition, the roles of the Taiwanese and South Korean governments play in tourism industry will be compared. Finally, results of these findings are used to formulate the recommendations which will arrest the decline and enhance the growth of the Taiwanese tourism industry. The recommendations will be given in respect of restructuring tourism institutions, marketing and promotion, tourist attraction management, infrastructure development, and training schemes. Future directions in long, mid, and short terms will also be recommended.
