Prosocial Behaviors Toward Siblings and Grandparents

Abstract This chapter aims to examine prosocial behaviors toward siblings and grandparents. First, the nature of prosocial behaviors toward family members and the underlying motivational factors are explained and definitional issues related to those behaviors are discussed. Next, the chapter presents two theoretical perspectives including evolutionary approaches (kin selection and reciprocal altruism) and relational perspectives on the origins of prosocial acts. And then, the chapter reviews the literature about prosocial act toward siblings and grandparents and its correlates. Finally the chapter discusses the role of social and cultural context and provide suggestions for future research.
