1215Aenveloped virus particles.Both HBV DNA and RNA containing particles fractionated similarly by density gradient centrifugation.The formation of these secreted RNA-containing viral particles could be blocked by treatment with core inhibitors, but not with nucleoside analogs.Conclusions: HBV RNA containing enveloped particles were observed in the supernatant of HBV infected cells and in the sera of HBV infected patients.Core inhibitors and nucleoside analogs could block HBV DNA production in HBV infected cells, but only core modulators could block the formation of HBV RNA containing particles.The more complete block of enveloped HBV particle formation (RNA and DNA particles) differentiates HBV core inhibitors from nucleoside analogs, which inhibit formation of only DNA-containing particles.Inhibitory effects on both HBV DNA and RNA particles could contribute to increased efficacy of HBV core inhibitor based treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients alone or in combination with nucleoside analogs.
